Snowshoeing is a fun activity that can be done with the whole family and even the little ones will enjoy it. Snowshoes allow you to walk on snow much more easily and comfortably than with snow boots alone. They can be fitted over any boot and are usually lightweight and inexpensive.
Thanks to the snowshoes, you can go on excursions and winter routes. You can choose routes of different difficulty and duration according to your needs. The routes can be done freely and independently, as there is a lot of information on the internet. It is advisable to go with a guide in order to do the snowshoeing excursions in complete safety.
If you want to go snowshoeing in Andorra on your own without a guide, we recommend you to have a look at the different snowshoeing routes.
Where to go snowshoeing in Andorra?
- The Ordino - Arcalís ski resort offers 3 routes for snowshoeing at all levels: easy, medium and advanced or difficult. The routes are located in the Coma area and are ideal for families with children.
- The GrandValira ski resort offers 4 routes, affordable for everyone and of different lengths (snowshoe routes of one, two, three and up to five hours). These snowshoe routes start at El Fron (GrandValira - Canillo) and from the adventure centre (GrandValira - Grau Roig). More information about snowshoeing routes in GrandValira.
- The Vallnord-Pal and Arinsal ski resort offers 6 routes for snowshoeing, which are distributed between the two sectors and where very cool excursions are organised in winter.
- Naturland also offers snowshoeing itineraries when the environmental conditions allow it (it is not common that there is a lot of snow in this area). During the tour you can enjoy the nature and landscape of La Rabassa.
If you choose one of the routes in these resorts to do on snowshoes, you can rent the equipment at the resorts themselves, so you don't need to buy it.
In the ski resorts of Andorra, after a snowshoeing tour, you can enjoy a good meal in one of the terraces or cafeterias, recharge your batteries and do some other activities such as mushing, snowmobile excursions, ice karting, igloo building, zip-lining or snow tubing. What equipment is needed for snowshoeing in Andorra?
As mentioned above, snowshoes can be rented at the resorts themselves. Unless the route to be followed is located outside, then you will have to take them into account and rent them in a suitable place or bring your own.
With regard to clothing, you should wear functional and comfortable clothes, which encourage the absorption of perspiration and facilitate movement, as well as adapting well to the temperatures and the snow so that you don't catch cold. It is essential to wear sunglasses with protection index 4 or 5, as the snow reflects quite a lot and can be very uncomfortable for the eyes. Don't forget sun cream to avoid getting sunburnt. Don't forget to check the weather conditions before setting off to avoid surprises and wasting time.
What should be taken into account before snowshoeing in Andorra?
Once you have started your chosen route, it is important to bear in mind:
- Be aware of weather changes (meteorology). Even if the forecast has been consulted before departure, it should be assessed during the itinerary to ensure that it is maintained and that there are no changes that pose additional risk.
- Assess the choice of route according to difficulty: The slopes, the risk of avalanches and the snow conditions must be taken into account in order to avoid unnecessary scares. A safe and comfortable route should be sought for all participants on the route.
- Adapt the activity to the experience of the group: physical fitness, experience and skill in handling the equipment and knowledge of the chosen route must be taken into account. All this in order to be able to adapt the route to less prepared people or beginners.
With caution and care, you can enjoy fantastic snowshoeing routes in Andorra, but the safety and well-being of all participants must always be kept in mind.
